Inheritance of R-o-i Blood Groups and Alkaline Phosphatase Polymorphism in Sheep.

چکیده
RENDEL and STORMONT (1964) found that in sheep sera subjected to starch-gel electrophoresis the zone of phosphatase activity which they designated B is highly correlated with the presence of soluble blood-group substance 0 in adult females. Since the presence of 0 substance is recessive to the presence of R substance ( STORMONT 1951 ; RENDEL, NEIMANN-SBRENSEN and IRWIN 1954), they inferred that the presence of the B zone was also a recessive trait. RENDEL, AALUND, FREEDLAND and MBLLER (1964), in tests of yearling sheep, confirmed the association between B phosphatase activity and 0 substance. However, tests of sera of lambs 2% to 4 months of age revealed a less marked association; there was some B phosphatase in the serum of most lambs regardless of their R-0 blood groups, although the mean B-zone score in lambs of group 0 was significantly greater than in lambs of group R. The data presented in this report were collected as part of a survey of serum alkaline phosphatase types of sheep and pigs. Tests of sera of sheep of groups R, 0 and i provide additional data on the association between the B phosphatase zone and group 0 in sheep and the absence of the B zone in R and i sheep. The A-0 blood-group system in pigs (RASMUSEN 1964) is related to the R-0 system in sheep, but no polymorphism of alkaline phosphatase types in pigs related to A-0 blood groups was found when sera from pigs were tested using the same techniques as for sheep. Sera from Duroc and Yopkshire pigs all had a phosphatase band comparable to the A band of sheep, and all sera tested lacked a band comparable to the B band, regardless of whether they were of group A, 0 or "-". Therefore only the data for sheep are reported here.

The Relationship between the Alkaline Phosphatase Polymorphism and Blood Group 0 in Sheep
I T was recently shown that alkaline phosphatase of sheep serum occurs in three molecular forms, A, B and C, with descending rate of migration in starch gel electrophoresis ( R E N D ~ L and STORMONT 1964). The phosphatase variation is closely related to the blood groups within the R-0-i system. B phosphatase is almost invariably found in animals of blood group 0, while animals of blood group R...

Molecular genetics selection on individual genes is a promising method to genetically improve economically important traits in livestock. The insulin like growth factor-I (IGF-I) gene may play important roles in growth of multiple tissues, including muscle cells, cartilage and bone. The objectives of the present study were the estimate the haplotype frequencies of the IGF-I gene polymorphisms i...
متن کاملEvaluation of the effects of hydroalcoholic extract of Berberis vulgaris root on the activity of liver enzymes in male hypercholesterolemic rats
Objectives: Hyperlipidemia can cause a variety of diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, and fatty liver which is followed by increased liver enzymes. Since Berberis vulgaris (B. vulgaris) root possesses antioxidant properties, the present study was conducted to investigate the effect ofits extract on the activity of liver enzymes in rats. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study...

Objective: Liver is an important organ that is exposed to many oxidant and carcinogenic agents, thus antioxidant compounds are beneficial for liver health. Artemisia contains flavonoid compounds and anti-diabetic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. Due to possessing terpene and sesquiterpene compounds, this plant has antioxidant properties. This study was done to investigate the eff...
متن کاملAssociation of the whole blood potassium polymorphism with resistant to saline in two sheep breeds of different climates of Iran
Abstract The whole blood potassium concentration has shown the bimodal distribution in sheep, which has been classified into LK and HK types; HK allele is recessive to LK with a single gene inheritance. This polymorphism showed different behavior in different environment, which could be due to adaptation process. This research was conducted on the Zel and kermani breed research station, which...
